Is history repeating itself? Bill Clinton bombed the daylights out of Belgrade so that Slobodan Milosevic would step down and surrender to authorities. The actual trial of the "Butcher of Belgrade" turned into a such a pitiful farce that it wasn't even worthy of satire.
Apparently Saddam Hussein was watching Milosevic's trial, and taking notes.
I don't have much to say about Hussein's trial except to note how dumbfounded I am that people like Ramsey Clarke are far more concerned with every jot and tiddle of international law, rather than the horrific evil committed by the likes of Saddam, and that they would gladly let a foul human being like Saddam go scott-free if even the tiniest flaw in regulations or procedures occurs. To them, a violation of "international law" is far more serious than the slaughter of 1,000,000 innocents. It truly boggles the mind.
The rule of law means something, certainly. It is one of the founding principles of this country, and one of the main reasons why we can enjoy freedom from government intimidation.
But the rule of law cannot replace justice. I don't believe that all corrupt heads of state should meet their end the way that Ceausescu did (just though it was) but I am sick and tired of villains ending up "in exile" on a posh island or in a luxury penthouse. I am sick of the Pol Pots and Idi Amins of the world not paying a price for their crimes. And while I'm on the subject, I'm sick of the "Free Mumia" and "Free Tookie" brigades, who would revel in seeing cold-blooded murders go free just to spite the American justice system.
What in God's name is wrong with these people?
