I know, I know ... I'm not supposed to be blogging. But this is just too good to pass up:
Kerry says he botched a joke -- a lame jab at "dumb" President Bush. What he probably meant to say was "You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don't, you get us stuck in Iraq."
Regardless, though, he needs to come clean and admit that he made a mistake and apologize for insulting the military. If he doesn't, his political career is probably over.
And you've gotta love VP Cheney: "He was for the joke before he was against it."

UPDATE: Kerry "apologizes," but sadly it's the old 'I'm sorry you're not sophisticated enough to understand what I really meant' line.
A lot of pundits think Kerry deliberately said what he said, and that he did not fluff a lame joke. And given the attitude of many liberals toward our military, that is not unbelievable. Still, I am going to give Kerry the benefit if the doubt and accept the fact that he misspoke, and kept on going because he did not realize he had made the gaffe.
But the moment the story hit the news wires, Kerry should have been forthright about his mistake and immediately apologized to anyone who may have been insulted by his careless remark. Instead he chose not to; or rather, he was simply incapable of doing it. Funny isn't it -- Kerry was the man chosen to lead America by the people who still demand apologies from President Bush.
John Kerry's political career ostensibly began with the denegration of American soldiers who fought in Vietnam. It is truly ironic that it might be ended by the same action. But at the same time, I can't think of a more deserving man.
And unfortunately for the Democrats, this incident, and not the Mark Foley scandal or Michael J. Fox or any other "October Surprise," will be what people remember most about the 2006 elections.
