This morning, Drudge has Bush leading in the popular vote by 3,518,453, with a total of 58,301,150 votes, a clear majority and a new all-time popular vote total, surpassing Reagan's massive victory in 1984.
But there is still Ohio ...
As of this writing, Bush is up by 136, 221 statewide. Now it's up to the Dems to decide if they are going to open Pandora's Box and file lawsuits to persuade the courts to order the counting of provisional ballots, which are assumed to lean heavily in Kerry's favor. There are over 200,000 of these ballots. The names, addresses, and voter registration status of the ballot voters must be individually verified before the ballots can be counted, which could take weeks.
Is it worth doing this with a clear 3.5 million popular vote margin for Bush? We'll have to wait and see.
Tom Daschle, the prune-faced, obstructionist Democrat most likely responsible for the bad taste that the party leaves in the majority of American mouths, lost his senate race. In the immortal words of Nelson Muntz: "HA! HA!"
Overall, the Pubbies picked up additional Senate seats and additional House seats and now have a clear majority in both Congressional delegations. That's a 10-year winning streak. Again, not good for the Dems.
Ballot measures to ban gay marriage carried by decisive margins in all 11 states that had them, even liberal Oregon. Here in Oklahoma, it wasn't even close, a 3:1 margin. That should crimp the gay marriage issue for a little while. Of course, if you can't win, you can still sue.
Several of the gay marriage ballot initiatives also carried language banning civil unions for gays. Ours did. I'm a little out-of-synch with most Christians because I do not oppose state-granted, secular civil unions for gays. Unfortunately, the marriage and civil union options were tied together on our ballot. And keeping marriage intact is too important for me to have voted "no" as a protest to the civil union language.
And in other news here at home, we now have a lottery. And a 4 cent/stick cigarette sales tax. And new state-controls on Indian casino gaming. Whoopee. (Not)
I have always been an ardent foe of lotteries. I think that they are a deceptive way to raise tax revenue. In fact, they are an outright tax on the poor. More lottery tickets are sold in poor neighborhoods to low income people hoping to "strike it rich" than in neighborhoods of middle class and wealthy citizens. We could raise the same amount of money off the backs of the same people if we added an income tax to state welfare benefits and increased the state income tax rate on families that make less than $40,000 per year. Of course, nobody would vote for that. But enough ranting. The deed is done.
Hopefully later today the Democrats won't be total asshats and will make the right decision, which is to concede defeat to Bush and get on with their pity party.
And for all the lefties who again made their pitiful threats to leave the country if Bush is re-elected - don't let the door hit you on your way out. Asshats.
UPDATE: 10:35 AM - Fox News is reported that John F. Kerry is officially the loser, and has called President Bush to congradulate him on his win. Kerry will formally announce his concession around noon today.
And we had 120 million voters, or 60% of the electorate turn out at the polls. That's the highest percentage since the 1968 Nixon/Humphrey slugfest. And the youth vote didn't happen. It stayed at about 17%, just as in 2000. Which proves that 18 - 25 year olds still aren't smart enough to be trusted with anything.
May I gloat a little?
