I'm not an "Idol" watcher; in fact I don't think I've ever watched more than 5 minutes of 1 or 2 episodes.
But I've got to congradulate Oklahoma's own Carrie Underwood, the new Idol winner.
Carrie is from Checotah. If you're not familiar with the town, it's an average-size (about 3500 people) farming community located on I-40 about half an hour east of Oklahoma City. Just up highway 69 from Checotah is Rentiesville, a tiny community known for hosting the Dusk To Dawn Blues Festival every Labor Day weekend - one of the South's best blues festivals - and the hometown of blues legend D. C. Minner.
Of course most of the finalists in the show also seem to come up winners. Clay Aiken seems to have had more success than the winner of his competition, Reuben Stoddard. And this year's runner-up Bo Brice already has a record contract. Then there was the whole William Hung phenomenon. In fact, if this story is true it would seem that the runners-up get the better deal.
At any rate, congradulations, Carrie, and best wishes for your career.
