As linked by Drudge, it appears that A&E TV network is planning a reality show based around the everyday life of porn queen Jenna Jameson. For those of you not familiar with Jameson, she became the queen of the adult film industry in the late '90's, dancing to packed houses at Las Vegas strip clubs and commanding outrageously high fees for appearing in films. She was also the queen of "box girls" - girls so popular that their mere presence on a box cover would guarantee video sales. She has appeared on rap album covers and music videos and stars in her own series of bestselling PG13-rated pinup calendars.
There is no doubt that Jameson has enjoyed success beyond what any other adult film star has achieved. She still commands top dollar as an entertainer, is in a stable marriage, and has managed to salvage most of the money that she made during her career. Yet even the mighty Jenna has suffered from the ravages of drugs, cosmetic surgery, and the relentless pressure of being "Number One."
Compare Jenna as an unknown 20 year-old model in the early 90's:
with Jenna today. Yes, these are the same person.
But the sad truth is that 99% of the girls in her industry end up just the opposite as Jenna, disappearing from the industry after only a few years of booze, meth, coke, endless partying, and self-degradation leave them haggard corpses of their former selves.
If "reality TV" decided to tell the story of the adult film industry honestly, then that is the "reality" that they would portray. It always strikes me as odd that the Left in this country goes into convulsive fits over how America is exploiting poor people in other lands in order to satisfy its thirst for wealth and material possessions, yet they deliberately ignore the emotional and physical carnage wrought by the x-rated film industry on its performers, even to the point of supporting and defending the intrusion of x-rated material into every possible facet of popular culture.
A&E has produced some outstanding television over the years, and remains one of the most watched networks on our TV here at home. But the last thing we need is a TV show that in any way falsely associates wealth, success and glamor with the porn industry, as this show is certain to do. Shame on A&E.
