I failed to list this topic in my previous post of blogworthy items.
President Bush gave what I consider to be one of his best speeches last week to the National Endowment for Democracy in Washington, D. C. Naturally, the speech was given during the daytime and received almost zero mainstream media coverage.
I don't have time to respond to the President's speech at length. Fortunately, Rev. Donald Sensing has done it for me in this well-written post and its follow-up.
In his speech, the President gave the best explanation to date about why we are fighting the War On Terror, who we are fighting, and what it will take to win.
To briefly summarize: Osama Bin Laden and his fellow Islamofascists (and I love the fact that the President actually used the word "Islamofascist") do not want open war with America. Instead, they want to conquer and destroy Muslims whom they consider to be apostate and heretical. Why? Because Islamofascists blame Muslim apostacy for the pitiful cultural and economic condition of the Middle East, North Africa, Persia, and Eastern Orient. Here is what Osama really wants, based on numerous interviews he has given:
1) The withdrawl of US money, troops, culture, and influence from the Muslim Ummah. This is Al Qaeda's primary goal right now, and the reason why they attacked us throughout the 1990's and on 9/11.
2) The destruction of governments within the Muslim Ummah that Islamofascists consider to be corrupted by non-Muslim values. This can only be accomplished after the United States and similar Western/non-Muslim influences have been completely removed.
3) The re-establishment of the Muslim Caliphate within the Ummah. This is to be accomplished by the imposition of strict Sharia law within the Ummah, and the subsequent killing of apostate Muslims, infidels, or any who oppose or violate the teachings of Sharia. When this occurs, Bin Laden believes that the blessings of Allah will be restored to the Ummah and to faithful Muslims. Incidentally, Al Qaeda is currently fighting for control of Iraq because they believe that they can accomplish this goal; the US invasion and ouster of Saddam has already accomplished goal #2 for them. Al Qaeda forces in Iraq also believe that they can accomplish goal #1 if they can get the Americans to quit fighting and flee the country.
4) Goals 1, 2, and 3 will lead to the beginning of a second era of world-wide conquest by the new Ummah, which will be united under the new Muslim Caliphate, purified by Sharia, and blessed by Allah. The ultimate goal of this new era is the world-wide domination of Islam and the vanquishment of all other religions and cultures, a goal that even Mohammed himself was unable to achieve.
Once you understand the complete picture, the Left's obsessive focus on "getting Bin Laden" suddenly seems like a red herring -- which it is.
I'm glad to see President Bush finally get around to explaining these points in a clear and direct fashion.
