MSNBC interviews Rev. Tim LaHaye, author of the popular Left Behind book series, about the recent events in the Middle East.
Surprise, surprise, Rev. LaHaye, just like Hal Lindsey a generation ago, believes that these are "The Last Days," and that Jesus Christ will return within our lifetimes. Or maybe just the "Rapture" will occur. Or something.
When you read the interview, remember two things. First, the dispensationalist view of the End Times, specifically the secret Rapture of the church, is firmly held by American protestant fundamentalist and holiness denominations, but by few others in the world-wide Christian church. So this understanding of the "last days" should not be mistakenly be attributed to traditional Christianity as a whole.
Second, Rev. LaHaye regards Biblical scholars and theologians who interpret prophetic or apocalyptic scripture metaphorically as "liberals," as do most dispensationalists. However, I think that it is much more "liberal" in the classical sense (that is, "to take liberty with") to read the Bible "literally" as the Dispensationalists do and then try and say that the prophet Daniel predicted the existence of the United States of America over 2500 years ago.
