It's 2008, not 2003, and we're winning big military victories against the Taliban in Afghanistan and al-Qaeda in Iraq:

An Egyptian blogger arrested for supporting higher pay for textile workers and controls on rapidly increasing prices has been released from prison. But while imprisoned, he claims that he was repeatedly tortured with electric shocks and beatings, and denied food and water for days.
Curiously, the AFP story quotes no human rights advocates condemning the alleged treatment of this blogger.

The Child Welfare League of America is crusading to end trans-racial adoptions, while at the same time supporting adoptions by same-sex couples. Confusing.
A Texas appellate court has ruled that the Child Protective Services Agency overstepped its bounds when it forcibly removed hundreds of children from the FLDS Yearning For Zion compound in April. The children are expected to be returned to the custody of their mothers shortly.
We know that the FLDS sect is run in a dictatorial fashion by a really creepy guy, and that teenage marriages and polygamy by group patriarchs are fundamental practices of the sect. But the call that triggered the raid on the compound turned out to be a hoax, and authorities found no evidence of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse of the children living at the ranch. The State of Texas had no right to take away these children, and I am glad to see that they will be reunited with their mothers.

Our $4 a gallon gasoline is still a bargain in Europe. Germans are paying upwards of $8 per gallon.
Huge, gas-drinking SUV's are still transportation of choice for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
Jupiter now has three large "red spots" below its southern equator. This is probably due to climate change on the giant planet. Word has it that acolytes of Al Gore are working day and night to come up with a way to blame America for this latest assault on nature.
More than 31,000 scientists across the US have signed a statement rejecting the theory of man-made "global warming." The next time someone tells you that "all scientists agree" on man-made global warming theories, remember this.

It appears that corruption and incompetence at the local government level has significantly contributed to the loss of life in last month's devastating earthquake in China. "Parents of the estimated 10,000 children who lost their lives in the quake have grown so enraged about collapsed schools that they have overcome their usual caution about confronting Communist Party officials. Many say they are especially upset that some schools for poor students crumbled into rubble even though government offices and more elite schools not far away survived the May 12 quake largely intact." As usual, the powerful are more equal than others.
Actress Sharon Stone thinks that China deserved the earthquake as a karmic retribution for the way that it has treated Tibet. The Chinese were not pleased with her foolish statement.

Barack Obama has resigned his membership in Trinity United Church of Christ. Apparently, after twenty years, he has finally figured out that the politics and social teachings of the church might be offensive to whites.

This Vanity Fair story on Bill Clinton characterizes him as -- are you sitting down? -- an irresponsible playboy who spends most of his time chasing dollars and skirts, and has his inner circle of friends and advisers so under his spell that they cannot persuade him to stop his self-destructive behavior. This really isn't "news" to anyone who observed Bill Clinton during his eight years in the White House, but it sure has the Clinton damage control department in a huff; they claim that Vanity Fair failed to interview any of Bill Clinton's current staff or sufficiently describe the numerous philanthropic ventures that he has helmed during the past eight years. Fair enough -- but all ex-presidents do those things. It is Bill Clinton's hedonistic behavior that fatally damaged his wife's presidential campaign, and that sets him apart from other former Chief Executives.
