FACT: Liberals consider Pat Buchanan to be a racist, an anti-Semite, and a closet neo-Nazi, so naturally anyone "supporting" Buchannan must also be a racist, an anti-Semite, and a closet neo-Nazi.
This false story about Sarah Palin originated in a July 17, 1999 AP story, which stated that Palin was "among those sporting Buchanan buttons" at a Wasilla luncheon for Buchanan attended by about 85 people, during a brief campaign appearance that he made in Anchorage and Wasilla. (Wasilla is in fact a "bedroom community" for Anchorage, located about 40 miles northeast of Alaska's largest city.) Buchanan later told reporters that he believed Mayor Palin was one of his supporters.
In an effort to dispel this rumor, Palin wrote a letter to the editor of the Anchroage Daily News, which was published roughly two weeks after the Buchannan luncheon. The letter said in part,
As mayor of Wasilla, I am proud to welcome all presidential candidates to our city. This is true regardless of their party, or the latest odds of their winning. When presidential candidates visit our community, I am always happy to meet them. I'll even put on their button when handed one as a polite gesture of respect.
Approximately one month after the Buchanan luncheon, Sarah Palin was appointed co-chair of Steve Forbes' Alaska campaign organization. She campaigned for Forbes until he withdrew from the 2000 Presidential race.
